Tommy Singer Peyote Bird Squash Blossom Necklace
This important sterling silver squash blossom necklace is signed “T,” the established hallmark of Diné (Navajo) silversmith Tommy Singer (1940–2014), a pivotal figure in the development and popularization of turquoise and coral chip-inlay jewelry during the mid-20th century.
The necklace is constructed in a classic single-strand to double-strand format using handmade sterling silver bench beads and is finished with a traditional hook clasp. Along each side are six peyote bird motifs, for a total of twelve, executed in turquoise and coral chip inlay set into hand-cut silver channels. These elements lead to a central peyote bird-form naja, a powerful and less commonly encountered variation of the Navajo squash blossom.
The peyote bird is a symbolic representation of an intermediary, carrying prayers between the earthly and spiritual realms.
