Description

Minnie Thomas Navajo Sterling Silver Necklace w/ Natural Turquoise & Bench Beads

This substantial and visually arresting Navajo necklace by Minnie Thomas is a certified handcrafted work of Native American jewelry art. Featuring five striking natural turquoise stones—each uniquely patterned with matrix—this piece exemplifies traditional Navajo silverwork at its finest. The stones are framed in hand-fabricated sterling silver settings adorned with twisted wire and graceful scroll motifs, reflecting expert craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The necklace transitions from a single to a double strand of 68 sterling silver bench beads, each individually handmade. These traditional Navajo beads provide a rhythmic, textural backdrop to the bold turquoise pendants. A classic hook clasp closure secures the necklace, while the largest central pendant—a naja-style drop—commands attention with a length of 3.5 inches.

A paper label reading “Minnie Thomas Original” and a blue certification sticker stating “CERTIFIED Genuine Indian Hand Made” are affixed to the reverse of the center pendant, confirming the maker’s identity and Native origin. Although Minnie Thomas did not use stamped hallmarks, her work from the 1970s is well-documented in the collector’s market, admired for its bold turquoise, silver volume, and cultural authenticity.

Minnie Thomas's jewelry, like this piece, reflects a peak era in Southwestern adornment—when Navajo silversmiths were producing powerful, heirloom-quality pieces that honored tradition while appealing to modern collectors. With its impressive size, material quality, and provenance, this necklace offers both aesthetic impact and historical value.

Condition:

This necklace is in good vintage condition, showing only mild, age-appropriate wear consistent with handcrafted Native jewelry. All five turquoise stones are securely set and remain free of cracks or chips. The sterling silver has developed a natural patina over time, which has been intentionally left unpolished to preserve its vintage character. A few of the sterling bench beads exhibit small, shallow dents—an expected feature of handmade beads from this era and not considered a flaw. Overall, the necklace remains structurally sound, beautifully preserved, and ready to wear or display.
