Description

Tommy Singer Peyote Bird Sterling Silver Concho Belt

This important leather concho belt is signed “T,” the mark of Diné (Navajo) silversmith Tommy Singer (1940–2014), a leading figure in the development and popularization of turquoise and coral chip-inlay jewelry in the mid-20th century. Singer’s work is highly regarded for its confident design, precise inlay, and substantial construction, and his hallmark is firmly established in the Native American jewelry canon.

The belt is fitted with ten sterling silver conchos, each executed in crushed turquoise and coral chip inlay arranged in the peyote bird motif. The conchos are mounted on a leather belt and paired with a matching buckle, which bears Singer’s signature. The scale and weight of the silver elements reflect the robust construction for which Singer’s work is known.

The peyote bird is a symbolic representation of an intermediary, carrying prayers between the earthly and spiritual realms. The materials, construction, and design of this belt are consistent with the period when chip-inlay peyote bird imagery became especially prominent in Navajo jewelry.

Singer’s concho belts are admired for their strong visual presence and sculptural quality. With its substantial silver weight and bold concho format, this example functions both as a wearable object and as a significant expression of mid-century Native American design.

This belt is presented as a piece of jewelry reflecting traditional motifs; no specific ceremonial use or provenance is implied.

This piece matches Lot HL133.
