Description

Cast-Brass “Flying Horse of Gansu” Inspired Sculpture — Han Dynasty Style

Dynamic cast-brass sculpture depicting a galloping horse poised mid-stride, one hoof balanced on a small bird motif. The design echoes the famed “Flying Horse of Gansu” from the Eastern Han dynasty, celebrated for its portrayal of energy, speed, and balance. This example captures the same sense of motion, with the horse’s arched neck, open mouth, flowing mane, and raised tail conveying vitality and grace. Subtle spiral detailing along the flanks enhances its sculptural interest, while the stylized base provides stable presentation.

The surface features a rich, green and brown patinated finish, intentionally applied to evoke the appearance of aged bronze. The piece is unmarked and appears to be cast in brass, giving it a warm tone beneath the patina. Substantial in weight and presence, this sculpture makes an impressive decorative or study piece inspired by one of ancient China’s most iconic bronzeworks.

Condition:
Good overall. Tail is attached but shows visible separation at the joint. Patinated by design, with varied coloration and textural depth. Minor surface marks and small abrasions consistent with age and material. Please note the Campbell’s soup can in photographs for scale.

Dimensions:
11.5" (H) × 14" (W) × 3" (D)
