Southeast Asian Bronze Standing Bodhisattva, 19th C., Lotus Base
A Southeast Asian bronze standing bodhisattva, likely 19th century, cast in a blended Khmer–Lanna–Lao devotional style. The figure stands on a lotus-petal base and wears an ornate tiered crown with foliate elements, complemented by layered necklaces and a patterned dhoti. The right hand forms Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching, while the left presents Varada Mudra, symbolizing compassion and offering. These mudras, together with the elongated limbs, slender fingers, and softly modeled features, reflect the same regional workshop practices seen across related 19th-century Buddhist bronzes. The sculptural language, alloy, and construction method align closely with the companion figure, suggesting both pieces originate from the same artistic tradition. A graceful representation of Avalokiteshvara created for temple or household devotion.
CONDITION
In good condition with age-appropriate surface wear, including scattered patination, abrasions, and oxidation visible around recessed areas and the open underside. Minor casting irregularities and small losses at the crown and extremities are present. Stable overall and displays attractively.
