19th C Continental Oil on Tinplate in Gilt Rococo Frame
Fine 19th-century Continental oil on tinplate depicting a young country maiden seated before a romantic landscape. Painted in the mid-19th century academic tradition, the work shows careful modeling of the face and hands, rich drapery in red and green, and a dramatic clouded sky, typical of German/Austrian genre painting circa 1850–1880. Her straw hat, scarf, and rustic dress identify her as a classic pastoral subject of the period.
The painting is presented without glass in an ornate Rococo Revival gilt wood frame with an affixed picture light. Handwritten notes on the backing record that it was cleaned and varnished with damar on 9/24/71, confirming professional conservation history and adding to its interest as a decorative 19th-century artwork.
CONDITION
In good condition overall, with stable age craquelure over the entire tinplate surface and several visible scratches in the sky area. The tinplate panel is intact with no losses. The gilt wood frame shows expected wear, including minor chips and patina. Backing paper is torn in multiple places and bears the 1971 restoration notation. Picture light remains attached at the top of the frame.
