L.C. Groves 1979 “Organ Mountains” Framed Photograph

A 1979 photograph by L.C. Groves (1919–1995), a respected New Mexico photographer known for his atmospheric portrayals of Southwestern landscapes. Groves spent much of his career documenting the dramatic terrain surrounding the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains, a subject that became central to his artistic identity. This image highlights his signature use of natural light and color, capturing the mountain range’s distinctive spires at a striking moment of desert illumination.

The work is signed and dated 1979 at the lower right and is professionally framed under glass, featuring a burgundy mat and rustic wood frame that accentuate the regional aesthetic for which Groves is celebrated. A strong example of late-20th-century Southwestern photography and a desirable piece for collectors of New Mexico art.

Artist Bio: L.C. Groves (1919–1995)

L.C. Groves was an American photographer best known for his evocative portrayals of the Southwestern landscape, particularly the dramatic Organ Mountains and the surrounding Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico. Born in 1919, Groves studied art at New Mexico State University and later pursued photography at the University of New Mexico, developing a refined sensitivity to natural light, atmosphere, and regional terrain.

Throughout his career, Groves focused on capturing the “now” of the Southwest—its mountains, desert flora, farmland, wildlife, and changing skies. His images were widely appreciated for their bold color, clarity, and sense of place. Groves operated a gallery in historic Old Mesilla, where much of his work was exhibited and sold to collectors, tourists, and regional art patrons.
