Description

Pair Century Chair Co. Ebonized Ming-Style Armchairs

This pair of ebonized Ming-style armchairs by Century Chair Company, Hickory, North Carolina, showcases the maker’s well-known craftsmanship and substantial construction. Maker-marked and heavy in hand, the chairs feature a traditional horseshoe-back silhouette with a sculpted crest rail, flowing arms, and a paneled backrest inspired by classic Chinese forms. The ebonized lacquer finish highlights the graceful profile, while the fixed upholstered seats—done in a modern multicolor grid-pattern fabric—provide a striking contemporary contrast.

Produced most likely between the mid-1970s and late 1980s, these chairs exemplify Century’s refined approach to Asian-influenced design. Highly versatile, they serve beautifully as accent seating, entry chairs, or formal statement pieces within an eclectic or Chinoiserie interior.
