Russian Hand-Carved & Painted Santa, Signed, Winter Scene (Ded Moroz)
This Russian Ded Moroz (Santa) is a hand-carved figure shaped from a single solid piece of wood, richly decorated in the vibrant folk-art tradition of the Sergiev Posad/Upper Volga region. His red and blue coat is adorned with elaborate floral motifs and gold accents, while the reverse features a charming winter village tableau of children building a snowman—an element typically associated with skilled studio painters rather than mass production. The underside bears the Cyrillic signature “худ. А.Ж.”, identifying an individual artisan (художник) and aligning with late-20th–early-21st-century independent workshop production.
Lively brushwork, a narrative back scene, and deeply carved facial details make this a standout example of modern Russian Christmas carving. A beautiful addition to any folk-art or holiday collection.
CONDITION
Good condition overall, with light surface wear and small paint rubs consistent with handmade wooden figures. No remarkable damage noted. Colors remain bright and the carving is stable.
