Description

Signed Phoebe Bird-Folk Ceramic Sculpture – Crow Kin Style Art

This remarkable hand-sculpted ceramic bird figure, signed Phoebe, stands at the crossroads of folklore, fantasy, and contemporary studio pottery. With its elongated stance, cloak-like blue-glazed body, and expressive bird head, the work clearly belongs to the artistic lineage often associated with “Crow Kin” sculptures—anthropomorphic bird-folk found in mythic storytelling, folk art, and modern reinterpretations. These figures traditionally symbolize messengers, watchers, and liminal beings who bridge the human and natural worlds.

Phoebe’s interpretation brings a charmingly rustic, tactile sensibility to the form. The glossy blue coat is ribbed and buttoned as though the creature has stepped out of a storybook, while the unglazed charcoal stoneware base and head add contrast and grounded weight. Each detail—hand-applied buttons, flowing texture, sculpted posture—reveals the intimate craftsmanship of a small-studio artist working outside mass production. Signed on the underside, this piece is both visually intriguing and culturally resonant, making it a standout for collectors of narrative ceramics and imaginative sculpture.

Condition
Good overall, with a small chip and an approximately 2" repair to the rear. Due to the intentionally rustic and organic construction, it is difficult to determine whether the area shown in the final image is an additional chip or a characteristic part of the artist’s original texturing. The glaze remains intact and vibrant, and the sculpture displays beautifully.
