19th C Chinese Round Polychrome Battle Carving, Architectural Fragment
This finely detailed round Chinese wood carving, dating to the late Qing period (c. 1870–1910), depicts a dynamic multi-tiered battle scene with mounted warriors, foot soldiers, and a commanding figure beneath a pavilion roof. Hand-carved by southern Chinese artisans—likely from the Guangdong regional workshop tradition—it originally served as an architectural inset in a domestic or temple structure. Rich polychrome pigments highlight expressive faces, layered figures, and deeply undercut detailing characteristic of Lingnan narrative carving.
Documented by the Bradburn Gallery as ART-293 and imported from China in 1990, the piece was later restored in Hong Kong using soft repainting techniques to enhance the surviving original artistry. Round architectural panels are notably rarer than standard horizontal forms, making this an exceptional example of 19th-century folk craftsmanship and an evocative glimpse into traditional Chinese storytelling in architectural décor.
CONDITION
Excellent overall, with no remarkable damage noted. Minor age-related wear and small surface irregularities are present on the paint and carving, consistent with antique architectural wood. Restoration performed in Hong Kong around 1990 is visible on close inspection but does not affect presentation.
