Herman Miller Bruce Burdick Modular Workstation Desk, Glass & Chrom
Designed by acclaimed industrial designer Bruce Burdick for Herman Miller, this striking modular workstation desk represents one of the most innovative moments in late-20th-century office design. Part of the celebrated Burdick Group system introduced in 1980, the desk features Burdick’s signature extruded-aluminum structural beam, a sculptural chrome base, and a dramatic ¾" thick glass top supported by Burdick’s articulated, machine-like support arms. Maker-marked and complete with its original key, the workstation includes two modular legal/letter file cabinets on ball-bearing rails, three slide-in paper trays, and two shallow drawers, all designed to reconfigure along the beam — expressing the full modularity for which the system became famous.
More than a functional workstation, this piece embodies a turning point in American office culture. Burdick, a former associate of Charles and Ray Eames, envisioned a desk that could flex with the emerging world of computers and electronic equipment — and his system earned significant acclaim, including recognition by TIME magazine as one of the Best Designs of 1981. Today, Burdick Group desks are sought after for their architectural presence, engineering elegance, and rarity on the market.
A compelling fusion of design history and functional sculpture, this workstation offers both collectors and contemporary creatives a commanding centerpiece rich with provenance and personality.
CONDITION
Good overall, with expected signs of use. The glass surface shows light scratches visible under angled light, while the chrome base and support arms display scattered scuffs and surface marks. Modular drawer units and plastic cabinets show typical wear but function properly. Please review photographs for full details.
