19th C. Watercolor Miniature Portrait in Carved Giltwood Round Frame
This 19th-century watercolor on paper depicts a finely detailed profile portrait of a lady in period dress, executed in the tradition of later miniature portraiture. While earlier miniatures were typically rendered on ivory, this example reflects the mid- to late-19th-century shift toward paper supports as portrait miniatures became decorative rather than personal keepsakes. The sitter’s attire and the subdued palette further support this dating.
The work is presented in an ornate carved and giltwood frame with pierced outer border and original glass—typical of wall-mounted display styles that emerged as photography replaced hand-painted miniatures. A previous retail tag from David Weatherford Antiques, Seattle, remains on the verso, indicating prior gallery handling. This piece offers an appealing glimpse into the transitional era of miniature portraiture and is an attractive addition to Victorian-era or early portrait collections.
CONDITION
In good overall condition with expected age-related wear. Frame shows scratches, areas of gilt loss, and age-related wood cracks. Debris is present behind the glass, and the paper backing on the verso is torn. The watercolor itself shows typical toning but remains stable. Wear is consistent with a 19th-century framed miniature.
