Description

American Renaissance Revival Carved Mahogany Griffin Table, c.1870

A richly carved American Renaissance Revival mahogany center table, dating to approximately 1870, distinguished by its dramatic trio of griffin-like supporters—each hand-carved with expressive faces, sweeping feathered wings, and muscular lion-paw feet. This bold zoomorphic imagery reflects the imaginative grandeur of post–Civil War American design, when New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore workshops produced some of the most sculptural furniture of the Victorian era.

The round top features warm-toned mahogany veneer with attractive swirling grain and a molded edge typical of the period’s refined parlor furnishings. Beneath, the underside construction—mixed hardwoods, applied brackets, and hand-shaped inner blocks—aligns with mid-19th-century American craftsmanship. The pedestal’s turned baluster form, transitioning into the high-relief carving below, demonstrates both artistic intent and structural confidence.

Statement pieces of this caliber were originally placed in formal parlors or grand entry halls, intended to impress through artistry and exuberant detail. Today, the table serves as a striking focal point for collectors seeking authentic 19th-century American carving or for those curating interiors with historic, gothic, or fantastical character.

Don’t miss the opportunity to acquire a sculptural example of Renaissance Revival artistry.

CONDITION

In good condition overall, with chipped veneer noted on the apron, light scratches to the top, and visible past restoration and previous repairs as shown. Structurally stable and displays well, with age-appropriate wear consistent with a 19th-century carved piece.
