Red Wing 5-Gallon Birch Leaf Crock, Union Stoneware Co.
This 5-gallon crock from the Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. dates to the 1910s–1920s and features the classic early birch leaf cobalt decoration, paired with the period-correct script “5” and oval maker’s stamp reading Red Wing Union Stoneware Co., Red Wing, Minn. Produced during the Union Stoneware era (1906–1930), crocks from this timeframe are known for their durable salt-glazed surfaces, buff clay bodies, and hand-finished rolled rims. The crisp cobalt markings on this example display the elongated leaf pattern associated with early Red Wing utility ware.
A substantial and collectible piece, it serves well as a decorative accent, umbrella stand, or functional storage vessel. Its desirable size, strong cobalt, and early birch leaf motif make it an appealing addition for Red Wing collectors and farmhouse-style interiors.
CONDITION
In good vintage condition with wear consistent with age. Several rim chips and small glaze flakes are visible in the supplemental reference images. Light speckling and minor surface imperfections appear as typical characteristics of early salt-glazed Red Wing stoneware. The body is structurally sound with no visible cracks, and the cobalt stamp and decoration remain clear and well-defined.
