Cummer Humpty Dumpty 144-Egg Carrier Crate, Pat. 1903
This early Humpty Dumpty egg carrier crate, patented February 1903, was manufactured by Cummer Mfg. Co. of Cadillac, Michigan, a regional wood-products maker known for producing these patented egg-shipping crates in the early 20th century. Constructed of wood with steel-rod reinforcement, the crate retains its original stenciling: “Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Humpty Dumpty Pat Feb 1903” and “Made by Cummer Mfg. Co. Cadillac Mich.” Designed to hold 144 eggs, it includes the classic slatted body, removable wooden lid with turned handle, and its period cardboard dividers. Humpty Dumpty crates represent an important stage in egg-transport innovation prior to the adoption of molded pulp cartons.
The underside is stenciled “Henry P. Glasow / Fond Du Lac Wis.” - Henry Paul Glasow (b. 1872).
CONDITION
In good antique condition with scratched surfaces, finish wear/loss, stains, and age-appropriate use. Wood shows authentic patina and several areas of old chew marks along the lower slats. Stenciling is visible but naturally faded. Steel rods remain intact and the structure is sound. Original cardboard dividers are present but fragile.
