Gildo Bautista 2000 Huichol Beaded Serpent Vessel – Signed Ceramic
Signed and dated 2000 by Huichol (Wixárika) artisan Gildo Bautista, this striking ceramic vessel features a vividly beaded serpent emerging through the clay body—an image deeply rooted in Huichol spiritual symbolism. Serpents are considered sacred messengers associated with rain, healing, and communication with the gods, themes central to traditional Huichol belief. The vessel is hand-formed with an intentionally rugged, cracked surface and a mottled green–ochre finish that evokes aged earthenware.
The serpent is rendered in thousands of hand-applied seed beads using traditional Wixárika color language, with motifs in red, blue, white, and black representing elements tied to ritual cosmology. This hybrid of sculpted clay and intricate beadwork reflects the evolution of modern Huichol art, where ancestral techniques are adapted into contemporary forms. A dynamic cultural artwork and an uncommon example from a Bautista-family artisan.
CONDITION
In good overall condition, showing surface cracks, texture breaks, and irregularities consistent with the artist’s intended aesthetic. Minor finish wear and small abrasions are present. The beadwork remains vibrant and securely attached. Please review photos for details of clay texture and natural variations.
