Richelieu & Ferndell Weir-Top Stoneware Pantry Crock Trio, c.1905–1920
This trio of Richelieu and Ferndell Brand stoneware pantry crocks was produced for Sprague, Warner & Company of Chicago and dates to approximately 1905–1920. Each features a salt-glazed stoneware body with a rich Albany-slip upper glaze and retains its original Weir-style 1882 patent stamped lid secured by a wire-bail closure—an early commercial packaging form used before tin containers became standard. The surviving product labels, including Fruit Butter and Mince Meat, represent two of Sprague Warner’s premium house brands and are an uncommon find in any condition.
These early food crocks were likely manufactured by one of the major Midwestern potteries such as Red Wing or Western Stoneware, known suppliers for Sprague Warner. Highly displayable, they offer strong appeal for collectors of country store advertising, stoneware, and early 20th-century packaging.
CONDITION
In good overall condition with age-appropriate wear to stoneware and labels. One crock shows a visible chip to its lid, and all labels exhibit losses, staining, and discoloration from use and storage. Wire bails display oxidation typical for the period. No remarkable structural damage to the bodies; glazes remain stable. Please review photos for details.
