Description

Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jug w/ Cobalt Handprint & Carved Figural Stopper

This compelling salt-glazed stoneware jug embodies the robust craftsmanship of late 19th–early 20th century American pottery. Its mottled, shimmering surface shows the classic “orange-peel” texture created when vaporized salt fused to the clay during kiln firing. A bold cobalt handprint-style splash accents the front—a whimsical folk-art touch used in various Midwestern and Northeastern workshops as a potter’s flourish or batch mark. Each splash motif is unique, adding to the jug’s collectible appeal.

Equally charming is the hand-carved wooden figural stopper, depicting a small basket of fruit—a delightful piece of functional folk art in its own right. Such stoppers were often carved by regional craftsmen or by the jug’s owner as a practical yet decorative replacement for the original cork. Paired with the jug’s sturdy pulled, applied handle, ovoid form, and warm stoneware coloration, it presents a rare combination of utility and folk expression.

Originally used for storing cider, whiskey, vinegar, molasses, or kerosene, this jug now stands as a handsome sculptural object. Its wabi-sabi surface, expressive cobalt mark, and figural stopper make it a standout piece for farmhouse, Americana, primitive, or curated rustic interiors.

CONDITION

Good overall, with no remarkable damage noted. Minor glaze speckling, firing irregularities, and surface variations are consistent with salt-glazed production of the period. Handle is secure; no structural cracks observed. Stopper shows expected age.
