Luis M. Bugarini Mata Ortiz Hand-Coiled Corrugated Olla, 10"
This impressive Mata Ortiz pottery jar by Luis M. Bugarini exemplifies the contemporary Casas Grandes ceramic tradition, combining hand-coiled construction with finely painted polychrome decoration. The vessel features flowing geometric and feather-like motifs executed in black and iron-red on a warm buff clay body, arranged in the dynamic interlocking style for which the region’s artists are celebrated. A distinctive corrugated and textured band encircles the upper shoulder—an uncommon, skillful nod to ancient Southwestern corrugated wares—adding visual depth and tactile interest beneath the flared rim. The underside is signed “Luis M. Bugarini.”
A strong display piece with both artistic and cultural appeal, this jar represents the innovative spirit of modern Mata Ortiz pottery while honoring traditional methods. Its bold form and detailed surface design make it an ideal choice for collectors of contemporary Native and Northern Mexican ceramics.
CONDITION
Good condition with areas of shelf wear and typical firing-related variations. Includes minor surface specks and a firing imperfection that presents visually like a crack (shown in close-up), but it is inherent to the firing process and does not reflect actual structural damage. Stable and displays well.
