Antique Holy Name Sick Call Shrine w/ Pietà & Reverse Glass, c.1900–1925
This antique Holy Name sick-call shrine dates to circa 1900–1925 and features a cast-plaster Pietà displayed behind a vivid reverse-painted glass panel in the traditional German–Austrian devotional style. The oak shadowbox frame includes two removable brass candlesticks for 1" taper candles, a key element of sick-call altar use. Below the main scene, a hinged wood door opens to a silk-lined compartment once used to hold the sacramental items needed for Last Rites; its lower glass panel displays a faded image of The Last Supper.
Rich with early 20th-century Catholic iconography, the shrine reflects the period’s Holy Name devotion, including the “Blessed Be Thy Holy Name” inscription. A compelling devotional object and an excellent example of European home-altar craftsmanship.
CONDITION
Good overall condition with age-appropriate wear and evidence of past restoration. Reverse-painted glass shows flaking and debris behind the panel. The cast-plaster Pietà exhibits small surface losses. Oak case has wear, scratches, and finish variation. Last Supper faded. Silk interior is faded. Original door latch has been replaced with a magnetic closure. Brass candlesticks show oxidation suitable to age.
