Red Wing 4-Gallon Salt Glaze Stoneware Jug – Maker Marked
This maker-marked 4-gallon salt glaze stoneware jug is an authentic example of early 20th-century production by the Red Wing Union Stoneware Co., a Minnesota pottery renowned for its durable utilitarian ware. It features the classic trio of identifiers prized by collectors: the large cobalt “4”, the red wing emblem, and the oval Red Wing stamp, all clearly applied on the shoulder. These marks help date the jug to the period when Red Wing was producing its most iconic stoneware, just before the shift toward art pottery in the 1930s.
The 4-gallon size is especially appealing, as larger, shoulder-form jugs were commonly hand-turned and fired with vaporized salt, giving them their characteristic glassy, lightly textured surface. This example embodies the form and craftsmanship that make Red Wing stoneware historically significant and highly collectible. A substantial and visually striking piece for display or collection.
