Berkey & Gay Queen Anne Dining Table, 5 Leaves, 8 Chairs & Table Pads
This refined Berkey & Gay Queen Anne–style dining suite embodies the grace and craftsmanship that defined the company’s golden era between 1915 and 1928, when the Grand Rapids maker was celebrated for elevating historic revival furniture into works of American artistry. The shaped walnut tabletop showcases luminous book-matched veneers bordered by burled walnut, creating a shimmering field of grain that shifts gently with the light. Resting on carved cabriole legs with soft shell accents, the table reflects the curated elegance Berkey & Gay brought to their interpretations of Queen Anne design. Included are five functional 10.75-inch leaves that allow the table to extend for larger gatherings, along with its fitted table pads.
Complementing the table are eight chairs—six side chairs and two captain’s chairs—each with a sculpted crest rail and traditional tapestry upholstery. Their silhouettes, carvings, and proportions echo the refined aesthetic that made Berkey & Gay one of the most respected names in early 20th-century American furniture. Together with the matching server offered in this auction, the suite forms a harmonious and impressive dining ensemble that has retained both its presence and its warmth across a century of use.
CONDITION
In good overall condition with expected age-related wear. The tabletop presents well with only light surface scratches and retains an attractive appearance; veneer on the main top is intact. All five leaves are functional but cosmetically worn, showing veneer chips, finish losses, and mild warping. Several chairs have loose joints and would benefit from reinforcement and regluing. Upholstery is aged and in need of full replacement, and one captain’s chair sags due to failed webbing. Despite these restorative needs, the suite presents well as a complete and impressive Berkey & Gay group.
