Navarro Tonalá Charro & Charra Hand-Painted Ceramic Figures
This lively pair of Charro and Charra figures comes from the Navarro workshop of Tonalá, Jalisco, one of Mexico’s most storied centers of pottery tradition. Each sculpture is hand-formed in barro cerámico and signed NAVARRO beneath the base—a hallmark of Artesanías Navarro, a family studio known locally for its figurative “tipos populares,” including the beloved Juanito and Lupita folk characters. Tonalá’s ceramic tradition dates back centuries, and these pieces beautifully carry that heritage forward with bold sombreros, stylized eagle motifs, and detailed lasso cords. The Charra’s rich red dress and the Charro’s classic black traje feature hand-painted acrylic designs typical of Tonalá’s artistic vocabulary.
Condition
Good overall, with light shelf wear throughout and a manufacturer’s defect beneath the Charro’s hat. Painted surfaces remain vibrant, and no cracks or structural damage are visible.
