Artist Biography: Stephen Hansen (American, b. 1950)
Stephen Hansen is an American sculptor celebrated for his witty, narrative-driven works executed primarily in papier-mâché and mixed media. Born in 1950 in Seattle, Washington, Hansen is largely self-taught, developing his distinctive visual language outside formal academic traditions. His career began in the late 1960s, and by the mid-1980s he had relocated to New Mexico, where his practice continued to evolve into the humorous and theatrical style for which he is now widely recognized.
Hansen’s sculptures blend satire, storytelling, and keen observation of everyday life. Whether portraying quirky characters, whimsical vignettes, or tongue-in-cheek reinterpretations of art history, his works maintain a lighthearted tone anchored by strong craftsmanship. He often describes himself as a “director” guiding a cast of sculpted figures, each one meticulously hand-painted and animated with expressive posture and personality.
His art has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with long-standing representation at galleries such as Zenith Gallery in Washington, D.C. Hansen’s works are included in numerous private, corporate, and public collections, among them the New Mexico Capitol Art Collection, U.S. embassy installations, and institutional displays. Over the decades, his sculptures have earned a loyal collector following and consistent demand at galleries and auctions.
Today, Stephen Hansen remains a distinctive voice in contemporary American sculpture, admired for his ability to merge craftsmanship, humor, and narrative into artworks that are both accessible and deeply engaging.
