Pair of Tlaquepaque Mexican Pottery Hen Casserole Dishes— Folk Art Charm
Brimming with color and personality, this delightful pair of Tlaquepaque Mexican pottery hen tureens showcases the whimsical spirit that made the Tonalá–Tlaquepaque region famous. Each hand-sculpted bird perches proudly atop its “woven basket” base, a classic motif of mid-century Jalisco workshops. The vibrant palette—sunset reds, leafy greens, cobalt blues, and bold black outlining—reflects the exuberant brushwork that helped define Mexican folk ceramics for generations. Beyond their charm, these pieces also serve as tiny lessons in regional craft: molded animal forms were a hallmark of Tlaquepaque artisans, who blended utility with storytelling.
Condition
In good condition with age-appropriate wear. Several paint chips and small areas of surface loss appear throughout, as shown in the photos. The ceramic forms remain sturdy, and the lids seat properly on each bowl.
Dimensions
Larger tureen: 6.5" x 9" x 5.5"
Smaller tureen: 4" x 6.75" x 5.25"
Note: Soup can shown in photos for scale.
