Antique Pueblo Drum – New Mexico Wood, Hide & Sinew, 15.25" H
This antique Pueblo drum from New Mexico, dating to the early–mid 20th century, is crafted in the traditional Southwestern manner with a single carved wood body, a taut rawhide head, and sinew lacing in a long diamond-pattern tension system. The scalloped hide panels at the rim and the hand-shaped wooden form reflect classic New Mexico Pueblo drum-making methods. The hide remains tight, producing a clear, resonant tone suitable for musical use or display.
Constructed from wood, hide, and sinew, the drum exhibits authentic age and handling wear consistent with decades of use. Its craftsmanship, tonal quality, and cultural significance make it a strong example of Pueblo instrument-making and an appealing addition to any Native American arts or ethnographic collection.
CONDITION
In good condition overall with age-appropriate wear to the wood and hide surfaces. Two breaks are present in the sinew binding, and scattered marks and abrasions appear throughout, as shown. The hide remains taut, and the drum plays with a resonant, pleasing sound.
