Vintage Taos Pueblo Drum, Painted Wood & Hide, 12" x 8"
A vintage Taos Pueblo drum, dating to approximately the late 1930s–1940s, crafted from a hollowed log with a natural rawhide head and traditional sinew lacing. The exterior features classic mid-century Pueblo painted motifs in red, yellow, and turquoise, forming a rhythmic sequence of diamonds and teardrop shapes often associated with Taos-area drum making of this era. The construction, materials, and paint style are consistent with drums sold through Taos Pueblo and regional trading posts during the mid-20th century.
Handmade and fully functional, this drum has a taut hide and produces a resonant, lively tone. Its bold colors and authentic craftsmanship make it a striking display piece as well as a playable instrument, ideal for collectors of Southwestern or Pueblo arts. A strong example of mid-century New Mexico craft tradition.
CONDITION
In good overall condition with age-appropriate wear to the painted wood surface and hide. One small break is present in the sinew binding, as shown, but the structure remains stable. The hide is taut and the drum produces a clear sound. Minor scuffs and natural rawhide irregularities are visible from use and age.
