“Wate and Fate” Character Reading Coin-Op Scale by American Scale Mfg.
This mid-century “Wate and Fate” character-reading scale by the American Scale Mfg. Co. beautifully captures the magic of the penny arcade era. Produced between the late 1930s and early 1950s, it offered far more than a simple weight check—patrons dropped a cent opposite their birth month to receive a personal “character reading,” blending early horoscope-style fun with practical use at a time when home scales were a luxury. The tall cabinet, original stenciled graphics, and iconic misspelled slogan “YOUR WATE AND FATE” give this machine irresistible nostalgic charm.
With its bold stature, classic boardwalk styling, and intact fortune-reading mechanism, it presents wonderfully despite age and stands as an excellent restoration candidate. A captivating piece of Americana, ready to spark curiosity, conversation, and imagination wherever it’s displayed.
Condition:
Fair condition with extensive age-related wear throughout. The red top shows heavy paint loss with exposed metal and oxidation. The yellow cabinet exhibits scattered chips, rust streaking, and finish wear, especially near the lower seams. The front dial lens is heavily scratched, clouded, and cracked, partially obscuring the weight ribbon, which is stuck between readings. Rust and oxidation are visible across the cast-iron base and platform. Graphics remain legible, and the machine presents well despite its wear. Complete in form and an excellent candidate for full restoration. See photos for details.
