Vintage American Pine Chair with Handwoven Rush Seat & Back
This vintage rustic chair features a solid pine frame with 1.5-inch turned legs and a handwoven natural rush seat and backrest. The chevron-pattern weave and simple, traditional construction reflect the American country and Appalachian ladderback tradition, likely dating from the mid-20th century. Its warm patina and textured rush panels give it a charming farmhouse character suitable for décor, seating, or display.
Crafted using vernacular methods common in rural workshops, the chair shows the workmanship of an earlier era—handwoven natural rush, mortise-and-tenon-style joinery, and pine shaped on a lathe. A versatile accent piece that complements cottage, primitive, and rustic interiors. Please review all photos for details.
Condition
In good condition overall. The pine frame is sturdy with surface wear consistent with age. Two areas of material loss are present on the back edge of the seat—one at the right rear and one at the right front—and general fraying typical of natural rush is visible. These issues do not affect structural stability.
