Joseph Ortega Signed Folk Art Pig — Hand-Carved Textured Wood Sculpture
This charming hand-carved pig is a signed work by New Mexico folk artist Joseph Ortega, a member of the celebrated Ortega carving family whose roots run deep in the region’s Hispano artistic traditions. Carved from local wood and finished with Ortega’s distinctive textured surface, the pig stretches forward in a whimsical pose, its expressive ears, painted eyes, and rope tail capturing the spirit and humor that define his work. Shades of soft pink wash across the surface, highlighting the hand-chiseled curves and lively character of the figure.
As the son of renowned santero Ben Ortega Sr., Joseph grew up immersed in woodcarving, carrying the tradition forward through imaginative animal figures prized by collectors. This signed example beautifully reflects the blending of heritage, storytelling, and individuality that make Ortega’s carvings so beloved.
A delightful, character-filled piece that brings warmth and personality to any folk art collection.
CONDITION
In good overall condition with surface wear consistent with age. The textured paint shows expected rubbing on high points, and there are visible cracks near the back and at the rope tail opening, as shown in the photos. Minor discoloration and small scuffs are present around the ears and hooves. The carving remains sturdy, and these marks contribute to the handmade character of the piece.
