Description

Casas Grandes & Mata Ortiz Pottery Books (1991 & 1999 Bilingual)

This offering brings together two significant bilingual publications on the ceramic traditions of northern Mexico.

  1. The Story of Casas Grandes Pottery by Rick Cahill (1991) presents a dual-language account (English/Spanish) of the pottery produced in the Casas Grandes valley, combining historical narrative, family profiles, and photographic record.

  2. Cerámica de Mata Ortiz (Artes de México #45, 1999) explores the revival and evolution of the Mata Ortiz pottery movement in Chihuahua - inspired by the ancient Paquimé tradition. It is a bilingual magazine-book format (Spanish/English), 96 pages, published June 1, 1999, ISBN 9686533931.

Together they form a valuable reference pairing — one tracing the pre-Hispanic and early historic ceramic legacy of the Casas Grandes region; the other documenting the modern artisan revival at Mata Ortiz that draws direct inspiration from that legacy. The books are richly illustrated (black & white and color), and appeal to collectors, students of ceramic arts, anthropological scholars, and gallery professionals.

Condition:

Overall, the pair is in good collectible condition. The Story of Casas Grandes Pottery shows UV fading to its cover which has lightened what appears to be originally bold cover-graphics. Minor shelf wear is evident (spine ends, corners) but interior pages are clean and binding remains sound. Cerámica de Mata Ortiz shows normal shelf wear for a 1999 issue.
