Early Chimayó Red Wool Textile with Whirling Log Motif
This early Chimayó-style woven textile features a vivid red wool ground centered by a traditional cream-colored whirling log motif—an important symbol in Southwestern weaving prior to the mid-20th century. The balanced layout includes four black linear elements in the surrounding field, a design approach characteristic of Northern New Mexico Hispano weaving traditions. The piece is handwoven with wool wefts on light warp threads, consistent with Chimayó and Rio Grande workshop production from the early to mid-1900s.
Its compact scale suggests it may have served as an altar textile, or decorative weaving intended for the regional tourist market. Despite wear, the bold color and strong geometry remain visually compelling, making it a desirable example of early New Mexico textile craft.
CONDITION
In good vintage condition with notable edge wear, including fraying, broken warp ends, and thread loss along both top and bottom. The field shows scattered small holes, minor thinning, some fiber pulls and light color variation appear throughout. The textile remains stable enough for gentle handling and display. Please review photos closely.
