Arturo Quezada Mata Ortiz Pottery Jar — Fine Geometric Design, Signed
Magnificent hand-coiled pottery jar by Arturo Quezada (Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico), a distinguished potter from the renowned Quezada family who helped revive the ancient Casas Grandes ceramic tradition. This rounded vessel displays Quezada’s exceptional precision and sense of symmetry, featuring an intricate all-over geometric design of interlocking triangular motifs in red and black on a natural buff ground. The surface is finely polished, and the form is perfectly balanced with a subtly flared rim.

Hand-coiled, stone-polished, and signed “Arturo Quezada” along the inner rim, this piece represents the finest expression of contemporary Casas Grandes artistry and is a museum-quality example of modern Mexican ceramic innovation.

Artist Biography – Arturo Quezada (Mata Ortiz, Mexico)
Arturo Quezada Olivas is a distinguished potter from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico, and a member of the celebrated Quezada family who revitalized the ancient Casas Grandes ceramic tradition. The son of renowned master potter Juan Quezada Celado, Arturo grew up immersed in the art of pottery, assisting his parents in all stages of production—from clay gathering and hand-coiling to painting and open firing.
Building on his father’s techniques, Arturo has developed his own refined style characterized by exceptional craftsmanship, precise geometric designs, and elegant forms. His vessels are fully hand-coiled, stone-burnished, and painted using mineral-based pigments derived from natural sources. Arturo is especially known for producing large-format jars with intricate painted and sgraffito (engraved) decoration, often combining traditional motifs with modern symmetry and innovation.
Today, Arturo Quezada is recognized as one of the leading second-generation artists of the Mata Ortiz pottery movement, which transformed local craft into an internationally collected art form. His signed works are represented in major Southwestern galleries and prized by collectors for their beauty, technical mastery, and direct connection to the Quezada family legacy.
