Lupe & Rey Rodriguez Mata Ortiz Pottery Canteen – Fine Geometric Design
This outstanding hand-painted pottery canteen by Lupe & Rey Rodriguez exemplifies the artistry of the Mata Ortiz / Casas Grandes pottery revival of northern Mexico. Fashioned in a flattened round form, the vessel is exquisitely decorated with precision geometric and feather motifs in black and red on a warm cream ground. Its surface exhibits the delicate polish and symmetry characteristic of high-quality Mata Ortiz ceramics. A natural leather strap is attached through pierced handles, allowing elegant display on wall or stand. Signed “Lupe y Rey Rodriguez” along the lower body.
Lupe and Rey Rodriguez are among the respected artisans continuing the Paquimé-inspired legacy of Mata Ortiz—transforming ancient Puebloan design language into contemporary fine art. Each piece is hand-coiled, painted with mineral pigments, and open-fired, making no two alike. Rarely seen in this canteen form, this work reflects both tradition and innovation—an enchanting fusion of cultural heritage and masterful craftsmanship.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The painted surface remains vivid and intact, and the leather strap is secure.
