Mario López Torres Woven Rattan Pig Sculpture, Taller Ihuatzio, ca. 1974
Playful and meticulously handcrafted woven rattan pig sculpture by Mario López Torres (Mexican, b. 1952), created at his Taller Ihuatzio studio in Michoacán, Mexico, circa 1974. Constructed with a handwoven chuspata reed exterior over an iron/steel frame, this piece exemplifies López Torres’ early mastery of sculptural animal forms rendered in natural materials.
The pig’s form is defined by tightly interwoven reeds, expressive features, and an iron curly tail—a delightful detail characteristic of López Torres’ humorous yet refined aesthetic. The original brass medallion is affixed, reading “Taller Ihuatzio Mich. / Mario López Torres / Tzintzuntzan / Hecho en México.”
