Robert Highsmith is a distinguished American watercolorist whose work captures the spirit and landscape of the American Southwest with remarkable sensitivity and precision. Born in 1949, Highsmith studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, and at New Mexico State University, where he developed the distinctive watercolor technique that has become his hallmark.
Working primarily in and around Las Cruces, New Mexico, Highsmith has built an enduring reputation for his luminous depictions of desert light, canyon vistas, adobe villages, and the quiet dignity of Native American subjects. His compositions balance the spontaneity of watercolor with a refined sense of structure and atmosphere, earning him wide respect among collectors and fellow artists alike.
A signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and the New Mexico Watercolor Society (NMWS), Highsmith’s work has been exhibited nationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections. In 2011, he received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, recognizing his lifetime contribution to Southwestern painting.
