Artist Biography: Michael & Robin Romero (Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico)
Michael Romero (born 1964) and Robin “Shy-Yai-Zta” Romero (born 1968) are acclaimed potters from Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, known for their finely detailed etched (sgraffito) pottery that blends traditional Pueblo forms with contemporary design precision. Working collaboratively, the husband-and-wife team learned the art of hand-coiling clay and preparing natural pigments in their youth, drawing on generations of Acoma potters before them.
Their signature style is distinguished by meticulous incised linework, depicting birds, deer, kachinas, and floral patterns framed by geometric Acoma motifs. Using traditional slips in red, white, and black, the Romeros carve each vessel by hand after firing, creating dynamic textural contrast and remarkable depth. Their pieces often bear the signature “M. & R. Romero, Acoma, N.M.” or “M. R. Romero, Acoma Pueblo, NM.”
The Romeros are part of a well-known Acoma pottery family, related to artists such as Deborah Aragon, Gertrude Romero, and Wilbert Aragon, who share a dedication to preserving and evolving Pueblo ceramic traditions. Their work has been featured in galleries, trading posts, and Native art auctions throughout the Southwest, and is sought after by collectors for its technical mastery and cultural authenticity.
Through their artistry, Michael and Robin Romero continue the Acoma legacy—merging the timeless symbolism of their heritage with a distinctive modern finesse that has made their pottery instantly recognizable and highly collectible.
