Robert H. Winston Black Walnut Rocking Chair, 2005
An exceptional handcrafted black walnut rocking chair by Robert H. Winston (American, b. mid-20th century), signed and dated “R.H. Winston designs 2005.” A master craftsman based in Silver City, New Mexico, Winston is celebrated for his sculptural interpretations of traditional chair forms, merging art and ergonomics with rare material beauty.
Expertly shaped from solid black walnut harvested from 200-year-old trees, the chair displays Winston’s hallmark seamless joinery, hand-contoured seat, and flowing organic lines. The high back with gently arched spindles provides both lumbar support and visual rhythm, while the smoothly curved runners and arms reveal his background in instrument making and precision woodworking. Finished to a rich, satiny luster, this chair embodies the spirit of the American Studio Furniture Movement, recalling the legacy of Sam Maloof yet distinctly Winston’s own.
A signed and documented example of contemporary American craftsmanship at its finest, merging comfort, artistry, and natural grace.
Condition
In very good condition overall, showing light surface wear and fine scratches consistent with gentle use. The walnut retains a deep, even sheen, and all structural joints are secure. Signed and dated beneath the seat: “R.H. Winston designs 2005.”

Artist Biography
Robert H. Winston is an American master woodworker and designer based in Silver City, New Mexico. Trained initially in the construction of musical instruments, Winston developed a meticulous approach to furniture-making that emphasizes tonal harmony, precision, and organic form. He works primarily with aged hardwoods such as black walnut, cherry, oak, and mesquite—often from 200- to 300-year-old trees he personally selects and seasons. His furniture, particularly his heirloom rocking and dining chairs, is renowned for sculptural fluidity, ergonomic excellence, and enduring craftsmanship.
Featured in New Mexico Magazine (February 2006), Winston’s work has been described as “a perfect blend of ancient woodworking traditions and design that enhances the unique character of the wood.” His signed pieces are sought after by collectors of contemporary American studio furniture and fine hand-crafted design.
