Gillinder & Sons “Maple Leaf” Uranium Glass Oval Tray, c. 1885
An outstanding example of late 19th-century pressed glass craftsmanship by Gillinder & Sons, this oval uranium glass tray features the firm’s documented “Maple Leaf” pattern (introduced c. 1885). The design presents a richly molded border of maple leaves encircling a finely detailed diamond lattice center. When viewed under UV light, the glass fluoresces a vivid green glow — a hallmark of uranium-infused or “vaseline” glass of the Victorian and early American pressed glass era.
This pattern appears in Gillinder’s catalogues from 1881–1891 and is referenced in the Early American Pattern Glass Society database and museum collections, including Iowa State University’s holdings. Highly collectible for its historical provenance, strong fluorescence, and exceptional clarity, this tray makes a striking display or serving piece for advanced EAPG or uranium glass collections.
Condition:
In very good antique condition with minor wear consistent with age. No visible cracks or significant chips; edges remain crisp and definition clear. The uranium glass retains excellent luminosity with strong UV fluorescence.
Dimensions:
Approximately 13 × 8 inches (33 × 20 cm).
