Description

William J. Bartko Desert Watercolor Landscape, Signed

Original watercolor on paper by William J. Bartko (1905–1989), portraying a bright desert scene with sunlit hills, sparse vegetation, and layered mountain ranges beneath a soft blue sky. Bartko’s clean washes and confident linework capture the clarity and stillness of the arid Southwest, reflecting his signature balance of realism and warmth. Signed “W.M.J. Bartko” at lower right.

Presented under glass in a light wood frame with a double mat—cream outer and pale blue inner border—that enhances the natural tones of the composition. A fine, characteristic example of Bartko’s desert watercolor technique and appreciation for the California landscape.

Artist Biography:

William J. Bartko (1905–1989) was an American painter known for his expressive depictions of the California and Southwestern deserts. Born in Toledo, Ohio, to Hungarian parents, he spent much of his professional life in Los Angeles as a commercial sign painter before retiring to Borrego Springs, where he pursued landscape painting full-time. Working in watercolor and oil, Bartko captured the subtle light, color, and atmosphere of the desert with refined simplicity. His works are represented in regional collections and continue to attract collectors of mid-century California and Western art.
