Description

William J. Bartko Desert Watercolor Landscape, Signed

Original watercolor on paper by William J. Bartko (1905–1989), depicting a tranquil desert wash dotted with low brush and trees beneath a clear blue sky. Bartko’s subtle handling of tone and light beautifully conveys the warmth and serenity of the Southwestern landscape, a subject he explored throughout his career. Signed “W.M.J. Bartko” at lower right.

Presented under glass in a wood frame, double matted in cream and pale blue, enhancing the scene’s soft desert palette. A fine example of Bartko’s refined desert studies, prized among collectors of mid-century California and Southwestern art.

Condition:

Good overall condition. The painting surface appears clean with vibrant color and no visible staining or foxing. The matting shows water damage at the lower right, and the wood frame has scuffs and paint loss throughout, consistent with age and display. Suitable for reframing or immediate presentation.

Dimensions:

  • Overall (framed): 10.25" × 12"
  • Visible (sight): 5" × 7"

Artist Biography:

William J. Bartko (1905–1989) was an American watercolorist and oil painter best known for his luminous California desert landscapes. Born in Toledo, Ohio, to Hungarian parents, he spent much of his career in Los Angeles as a commercial sign painter before retiring to Borrego Springs, where he painted full-time. His serene studies of arroyos, smoke trees, and desert light reflect a refined control of watercolor and a deep appreciation for the American Southwest’s quiet beauty.
