Description

Ivan Tomek “Praha Street Scene” — 1998 Signed, Framed & Matted Cityscape

Vibrant and architecturally expressive, this 1998 mixed-media cityscape by Ivan Tomek captures the colorful rhythm of historic Prague architecture. Tomek (Slovak-born, active in Prague) is recognized for his dynamic depictions of Old Town streets and rooftops, where strong graphic outlines meet a kaleidoscope of layered color. His work reflects the modernist Czech tradition, blending structure and spontaneity to convey the atmosphere of Prague’s Golden Lane and surrounding districts.

Signed “I. Tomek Praha 98” at lower right. Beautifully framed and matted behind glass, featuring a richly detailed bronze-tone frame with linen mat. Tomek’s distinctive palette of blues, ochres, and rose hues evokes both warmth and architectural rhythm, marking this as a quintessential example of his late-century Prague period.

Condition:

In good condition, showing light wear to frame and mat consistent with age. Artwork presents clean and vibrant behind glass, with no visible tears, stains, or fading. Ready to hang and display.

Dimensions:

  • Overall (framed): 25 x 25 inches

  • Visible image: 13.5 x 15.8 inches

Artist Note:

Ivan Tomek (b. Slovakia, active Prague) gained recognition for his expressive urban scenes and atmospheric portrayals of Czech architecture. Reportedly one of the “mystery painters” who inspired author Paulo Coelho during a 1980s stay in Prague, Tomek’s works continue to be admired for their blend of color abstraction and architectural fidelity—an embodiment of post-modern Central European artistry.
