Santa Clara Pueblo Redware Horno Incense Burner
Small Santa Clara Pueblo redware incense burner modeled after a traditional adobe horno (oven). Hand-coiled and stone-polished from the region’s iron-rich clay, the piece bears applied white slip painted motifs—stylized leaves and waves—and is signed “Cepona” on the underside. The domed form, arched front opening, and vent holes indicate its use as an incense or charcoal burner.
Works of this type were produced mid-20th century within Santa Clara Pueblo, blending functional folk craft with the Pueblo’s celebrated redware tradition. The Cepona signature represents a lesser-known maker, contributing to the record of midcentury Santa Clara artisans. A distinctive and authentic Pueblo pottery form with both cultural and decorative appeal.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with light surface wear and small edge nicks consistent with age and handling. Interior sooting from prior use. Burnish remains intact and slip decoration clear.
