Japanese Sterling Silver Abacus Salt & Pepper Shakers, 73.5g
Pair of mid-20th-century Japanese sterling silver salt and pepper shakers crafted in the form of miniature abaci. Each features rows of silver beads that slide freely along the rods, a pierced top for dispensing, and a sliding panel beneath for refilling. Stamped “STERLING.”
Made for the export market, these shakers reflect Japan’s clever postwar silver novelties—functional, charming, and slightly naïve in execution. The abacus motif, symbolizing prosperity and calculation, adds cultural appeal and a touch of whimsy.
Condition:
Good overall, with surface wear and light tarnish consistent with age. Slightly uneven edges and solder joins typical of export-grade silver. Beads move freely. We’ll leave the polishing to you.
Dimensions:
Overall: ½" × 2 7⁄16" × 25⁄32"
Weight: 73.51 grams
