Artist Biography — Carol Hurd (American, b. 1935)
Carol Hurd, daughter of renowned artists Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, was born in 1935 and raised on the family ranch in southern New Mexico. Growing up amid one of America’s most celebrated artistic dynasties, Hurd developed a profound connection to the land and the animals that inhabit it—especially horses, which have remained her lifelong artistic muse.
From an early age, Hurd began sketching horses, exploring their form and movement as symbols of freedom, grace, and power. Over the decades, she has refined a distinctive visual language that merges realism with abstraction, using layered color and flowing line to convey the spirit of her equine subjects. Her compositions often feature the horse as a central, almost mythic figure—both grounded in nature and expressive of inner vitality.
Hurd’s work is represented by the Wyeth Hurd Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and appears in numerous private and regional collections. Her paintings and limited edition prints—such as Turquoise Horse, a signed edition of 100—demonstrate her signature style: elegant, fluid, and suffused with a sense of movement and serenity.
As a third-generation artist in the Wyeth-Hurd lineage, Carol Hurd continues to uphold the family’s legacy of artistic excellence while forging her own vision rooted in the landscapes and life of the American Southwest.
