Description

1950s Llewellyn Inc. NYC Black Lucite Handbag with Clear Handle

Chic mid-century Lucite handbag by Llewellyn Inc., New York City, dating from the 1950s. This sleek oval handbag features a glossy black Lucite shell paired with a clear arched Lucite handle, accented by polished silver-tone metal hardware at the hinge and handle mounts. The interior lid bears the signature engraved plaque “N.Y.C. Llewellyn Inc.”, authenticating its maker.

Llewellyn Inc. was among New York’s foremost producers of Lucite handbags in the 1940s–1950s, celebrated for their sculptural forms and modernist flair. This example captures that spirit perfectly—elegant, futuristic, and unmistakably mid-century. A standout piece for collectors of vintage fashion accessories or as a refined retro evening purse.

Condition

In good vintage condition, showing surface scratches and light scuffs consistent with age and use. Some residue visible on the top of the lid from an old adhesive label, as shown in photos. The handle remains clear and securely attached; hardware retains shine with minor oxidation. No cracks or structural damage observed. Presents attractively overall.

Dimensions

Approx. 6.5 x 8.5 x 3.5 inches
(Height with handle: approx. 11 inches)

Llewellyn handbags are highly collectible examples of 1950s American Lucite design, often associated with the later “Lewsid Jewel” line. Black-shell versions are less common than the pearlized or clear variants, making this piece particularly desirable among collectors of vintage handbags and mid-century plastics.
