Santa Clara Blackware Jar — Carved Avanyu Design, Attributed to Lula Tapia
Elegant hand-carved blackware pottery jar attributed to Lula Tapia (Santa Clara Pueblo, b. 1940), a member of the distinguished Tafoya–Tapia family of Pueblo potters. This finely polished vessel features a boldly carved Avanyu (water serpent) motif wrapping around the body, symbolizing water and renewal in Pueblo tradition. The surface gleams with a rich jet-black luster achieved through the traditional reduction firing process developed by generations of Santa Clara artists.
A faint pencil signature ending is visible on the underside, partially obscured by adhesive residue from an old protective pad. Measuring approximately 4.5 inches high by 6.5 inches in diameter and weighing 2 lbs, this piece captures the refined balance of form and symbolism characteristic of Tapia’s work. A Campbell’s Soup can is shown in photos for scale.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with light surface scuffing and minor shelf wear consistent with display. Adhesive residue and partial signature loss are present on the underside, where a felt pad was previously affixed. The burnished surface retains a strong, glossy sheen, with no cracks or structural damage.
