Vibrant Mexican Wall Charger – Aztec Calendar Folk Art 16.5"
Vintage hand-painted ceramic wall charger featuring the Aztec Sun Stone (Calendar) surrounded by vivid folk scenes of village life, animals, and natural landscapes. Crafted in Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico, during the mid-to-late 20th century, this piece exemplifies the region’s celebrated folk pottery tradition, blending pre-Columbian symbolism with colorful popular art. The central medallion depicts Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun deity, framed by intricate geometric motifs, while the outer border bursts with miniature figures and bright, festive imagery.
Rendered in a lively palette of turquoise, red, orange, violet, and yellow, the design captures the spirit of Mexican artisan craftsmanship and storytelling through clay. Unmarked on the reverse and fitted with a wire for wall display. A dynamic and collectible example of Tonalá folk art that celebrates Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.
Condition
Excellent condition overall, with no damage or repairs. The hand-painted enamel surface remains vivid and intact, showing only minimal wear from handling. The reverse is unglazed terracotta with minor natural surface variations and a secure hanging wire, consistent with traditional Mexican production.
