Carved Wooden Springerle Mold Panel — Mounted Cavalry Officer
Finely hand-carved wooden springerle or gingerbread mold panel, depicting a uniformed cavalry officer on horseback amid stylized foliage. Carved from a single solid block of hardwood, this richly detailed relief shows crisp linework in the reins, saddle blanket, and uniform, characteristic of European mold carving from the 18th–19th centuries.
Comparable examples appear in historical references on early European cookie molds, where large wooden molds from Germany and the Netherlands featured secular subjects like knights and horsemen. This piece likely served either as a large master mold or as a decorative folk panel.
The reverse is flat and suitable for wall mounting, making it a striking piece of traditional craftsmanship and a distinctive display accent for kitchens, collections, or period interiors.
Condition
Good overall with wear and rubbing to edges and corners consistent with age. The carving remains sharp and expressive, and the wood retains an appealing aged patina. No structural cracks or losses noted.
